My New Year's Re-Delusions

Adios 2011!

My New Year's Resolutions could pretty much double as my "Bucket List."  It's gonna take that long for me to complete.  I don't need to write up a list of resolutions every year.  I just renew the same list over and over.  You know; lose weight, exercise more, save money for retirement, become debt free, clean out the photo closet... they are all delusional fantasies.  (Especially the photo closet. Don't open that door unless you are prepared for an avalanche!)  The following list is actually based on a 2006 one I found in a notebook:

Gale's 2012 List

(If lost or stolen, please refer to 2011, 2010, 2009 or previous lists...)
Green means "shows improvement" and black means totally ignored

1.  Lose Weight-   Well, a few pounds is better than nothing.  I will reach my goal by the year 2032.

2.  Save Money-   Only marginally better than # 1.  I think I can scrape up an extra $70 more than last year.

3.  Exercise 3x per week-  Getting closer!  I average 1-2x a week at yoga classes!  It has been great!

4.  Read one book monthly-  Haven't come close.  Maybe 6 books all year!  Been busy!

5.  Finish half-done craft projects-  ROFLOL!

6.  Mail out magazine article and book queries to actually sell something-  See #5.

7.  Start IRA and Drip accounts for retirement-  See #5 also.

8.  Clean out and organize all closets, laundry area, basement and garage-  #5 again!

9.  Cut out white sugar, pasta, four and rice-  Major #5!

10. Put all photos in organized books or boxes-  Still have closet avalanche!

What are some of your repeat resolutions????

Wishing you a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New 2012!

See ya next year!
Gale

PS:  ROFLOL-  I just saw another old list that had "drink at least one green tea daily" and I couldn't even accomplish that!

The Day After Christmas ( a poem--sort of)

It's the day after Christmas and all through the house, the kids are still sleeping while I use the mouse.

Today is Mark's birthday, he's now 49.   I need to find a great gift and all will be fine.

The dishes are done and most things put away, so I've no excuse to waste this nice day.

We had a good Christmas, we all agree.  We were happy to see many friends and family.

Not all was well as you might guess, it wouldn't be normal if not for some mess.

For Christmas we got Taylor a funny goldfish, but suddenly it was floundering in it's fish dish.

Audra was in charge of him for only two days.  In that short time he nearly passed away.

But what many of you likely don't know, is Mark's a "fish whisperer" and revived his air flow.

Seems Audra felt food meant kind loving care, but all it did was suck out his water's air.

She learned a good lesson and now he's with Taylor.   I'm not sure we did that fish any favor.
Everyone in the house pitched in to get dinner.  Folks seemed to enjoy it and didn't leave thinner.

I waited a year for Mark to hang a kitchen light, that morning he decided to do it, to my delight.

However, my excitement was very short-lived, as it crashed to the floor for the box wouldn't give.

So my lights don't match, but it doesn't matter.  Back to Home Depot to make a small clatter.

I'd better get going.  I've got chores to do.  I hope all had a great Christmas and have a Happy New Year too!

Until next time,
Gale

Merry Christmas From the 'Creek Everyone!

Why is it we know Christmas comes on December 25th every year, yet we always wind up doing lots of last minute errands and chores?  Every year I vow to start earlier and don't.  Sadly, when we do that we miss the true meaning of Christmas and become more like this:

Satan Santa

This cookie came out of the oven with an attitude.  It had a crease between its eyebrows and the raisins we baked in that way...LOL  He met his maker... literally!

instead of this...

Jolly Old St. Nick

Our friend Whitney showing off her masterpiece.  These Santas are really works of art and a lot of work!
(Cutters come from Grammascutters.com and they are known as Aunt Chick's Santy (sic) Cutters.)

Here are some things to help get you in the holiday spirit (sorta):

My friend Chuck said he just put up his Christmas Tree and was enjoying the fresh pine scent...

He may have the right idea as I have needles on the floor and he doesn't!  We did a different tree this year.  It's small, so most of our ornaments were too heavy.  I went with light ones of red, green, gold and white...

Now for the real "Reason of the Season!  Audra was asked to be in a 6 piece ensemble to record "Carol of the Bells" as Ohio Wesleyan University's Christmas Greeting.  Here is the link:

Soakin' in the 'Hood: Rain, Rain, Go Away!

My sense of humor is waning...
It's raining, it's pouring, the old man says I'm snoring... what's the point in getting up when it is so dreary out?   Our yard is saturated and a river runs through it.  I had to go through a swamp to clean the hen house.  Every footprint I left filled with water.  It's the Ohio version of Oceans '11 around here.  It is said that if you don't like the weather here, don't worry, it will change in a couple hours.  This forecast is easy:  Sun comes out for 2 minutes, rinse, repeat.

Our front yard...

My neighbor's backyard, attached to another neighbor's overflowing pond... some of Mark's trees in foreground...

Our side yard...

Well, must slosh through final errands and chores!  Am planning to post a far cheerier message by Saturday evening.

See you then!

“A Doggone Disaster: Diary of a Good Trip Gone Bad”

Here is an early Christmas gift.  This is a true story of one of my more "memorable" trips.  It is a humor piece (I wrote many years ago) because if I didn't laugh, I would cry.  Please excuse the spacing as I copied and pasted and it didn't behave.  There are many tidbits of advice for those of you traveling about this holiday season.  Please be careful, but have a great time!   Enjoy!

It snowed and snowed some more.  According to the news networks, it was the worst storm in 27 years.  It was February 1994.  I was on my way to New York City for the famous Westminster Dog show weekend from Columbus, Ohio.  The airline attendant said my friend Barb and I were “lucky” to arrive at Newark airport as it closed minutes later.  That was, in my opinion, the last of the good “luck.”

After a hair-raising, smelly $52 cab ride with our now vomiting Yorkshire Terrier, we arrived at the hotel.  (I applaud New Yorkers for cleaning up the cab service!  Now, there is no smoking or incense allowed.  The cabs are reasonably clean, the drivers fairly polite and along with a map there is a “Rider’s Bill of Rights” posted.  Bravo!)  I invited Barb out to lunch at the now defunct Russian Tea Room.  I decided my regular handbag was too much of a bother, so I stuck about $300, credit cards, my driver’s license and designer sunglasses into a waist pouch.  Since I thought it made me “look fat” to wear the pouch, I decided to carry it.  Seemed like a good idea at the time…

The Russian Tea Room was just a few long blocks from our hotel, but it was so nasty out after a few

steps we decided to try for a cab.  After finally getting one, we were quickly thrown out for asking why

the meter wasn’t on.  So, we trudged on in the wind and snow.  Lunch was lovely, though few Russians

could have afforded it.  We ordered two Caesar salads, one coffee, one hot tea and two pieces of cake

for $48 plus tip.  I treated, deciding to charge it to save my cash for later...

Next we hiked to Bloomingdale’s because all the cabs were full.  Even a New Yorker will pay when it’s

eight degrees and windy!  I bought around $90 in trinkets for my family.  The clerk talked me into

opening a charge account to help her win a contest.  Oh well, I really didn’t want to part with that cash

anyway….

But part I did!  It was now rush hour and the cabs were all heading to the garage.  Barb (then a smoking senior citizen) was near exhaustion and threatening to rent another room just to rest.  After all but throwing myself in the street, I got an off-duty cab to stop.  He seemed nice enough, but couldn’t take us all the way because he wanted to get home.  He stopped in the middle of a busy intersection, cars coming, snow piled high on the curb and dumped us out.  After jumping out and rushing to pay, I helped my friend up over the snow bank and we walked up to the hotel.  Just then I realized I only had my Bloomie’s bag.

There is no way to adequately describe my horror.  I didn’t know a cab number and my partial name was a joke (Mohammed something.)  The hotel security manager was sympathetic but assured me it was hopeless.  My pouch would never be turned into the Cab Authority.  I cancelled the credit cards, including the 15-minute-old Bloomie’s one. I wonder why the emergency number you need to call is on the back of the card? How is that helpful?   I called the Cab Authority out of desperation and got a canned message.  I don’t think anybody ever answers that phone.  I tried other avenues winding up frustrated and mad.  Who do I get to beam the bat signal?  Here I was on the first hours of a trip without any money or ID.

Barb loaned me all the money I needed and I was smart enough not to take all my credit cards.  (Although a smart person doesn’t get in this situation.)  Later, I would be getting all the lovely bills for what I had already charged in an effort to save my cash.  She also gave me a choice:  I could either let this ruin my trip or I could get over it and enjoy the next few days.  I really had to think about that!

After dinner, her treat this time, the next 13” of snow fell and crippled the city.  Cabs were hiding in parking garages because the streets were awful.  We went to bed early, very tired and weary.  Barb had the TV on watching “Matlock,” but turned it off in a few minutes.  I was almost asleep when I heard bang, bang, bang, bang, bang!  I asked her if she heard that and she said no.  (She’s a bit hard of hearing though.)  Oh, well, it was probably nothing.  All became quiet and we finally fell asleep.

The next morning a couple guys in the elevator were talking about a shooting:  Five shots, point blank, in the room right below ours.  I stupidly asked if the person died.  You bet.  Apparently he was there with someone’s wife, but she must have not been in the room when hubby showed up or she would have screamed.  I think I would’ve heard that.  What if a bullet would have come through the floor?

Since I now knew the security guy (he was snowed in along with the rest of the staff) I asked him if I really heard shots.  He drew me aside and asked what I knew.  He said a police detective would be contacting me.  Hey, I’m an ear-witness to a murder!  Of course, before I told the detective anything, I brought up my problem.  He said he’d look into it.  I never heard from him again.

Well, we didn’t win anything at the dog show, so it was time to go out into the city again.  The next cabbie lectured us on the importance of getting a number and a receipt.  I don’t see what good that does if nobody answers the phone.  (Also worth mentioning is I didn’t get my new American Express card until two day after I got home.  So much for instant service.)

We enjoyed the “Phantom of the Opera” (because I had left the tickets in my regular purse.)  We had a drink at Sardi’s and a pleasant time.  We even easily got a cab home.  Back then if you got a cab in NYC you had to be sure to know your route because sometimes you got an expensive, impromptu tour.  I’ve caught cabbies and deducted it from their tip!  They seem to be better about that now too.  Bravo again!

The final evening of our trip I was to receive an award from the Dog Writers of America.  I was one of three finalists in the newspaper article category.  The presentation went on longer than the Oscars…Best Article While Holding Your Breath Underwater…you get the idea.  A runner was supposed to bring the losers (who had to stand up) their certificates while the winner accepted their prize.  My runner left me standing and I was ready to leave without my certificate when she realized what she’d done (she was busy hugging her friend the winner.)
By the next day we couldn’t wait to get home.  Even that was delayed more than three hours.  They kept de-icing the plane, but it would just freeze up again while we were sitting on the runway.  So when we got back to Columbus in the wee hours we were tired, but happy.

We’ve been back to the “Big Apple” many times since this (and even won sometimes.)  We love it.  Winter isn’t the same without our Westminster trip.  I highly recommend visiting there, but be prepared for an adventure!  You never know what’s going to happen.  Please try to pick better weather and for goodness sake, hang onto your money!

Until next time!

The "Dreaded" Christmas Letter!

Hello all!  If you don't know my family you probably can skip this post--unless you are interested in the cutting edge, extreme, wild, fun, thrilling, glamorous, fascinating, extraordinary lives we lead here in Cental Ohio! If you believe this and read on, you must be really bored...

L to R:  Audra, Gale, Taylor and Mark at Clifton Mill near Yellow Springs, OH.

Dear Family, Friends and Esteemed Associates,

Mark, Gale, Audra and Taylor hope this finds you happy and in good health.  This year went pretty well.  We certainly have a lot to be thankful for!  Nothing much bad happened to report and that is wonderful!

I want to keep this short and sweet, so here are the "highlights."

MARK-  He got himself a 1918 Mack truck fixer upper and sold most of his other stuff.  (Somehow the barn is still full???)  He has spent most of the year working out of state, so not a lot of time to do much else.  He is this year's Steam Thresher club president.

Audra and Mark on his 1918 Mack Truck

GALE-  She turned the big 5-0 this year.  She's been enjoying two yoga classes a week and has met many new friends through it.  She is still crafting, but this year added chickens as another hobby, one that at least provides good eggs (sometimes!)  They are funny little critters.  The other hobby addition was this blog, which she enjoys a lot!  The response has been pleasingly positive so far...

Gale with lifelong friends at Audra's Graduation Party.  L to R:  Julie Snyder, me, Carole Kincaid and Tami Horton

AUDRA-  She graduated high school with honors last Spring.  After a somewhat confusing start (mostly regarding living arrangements) she has settled into college life at Ohio Wesleyan, where she has a nice scholarship to play the french horn.  We see her often as she's only a half an hour away.  She has made many new friends and has learned a lot about being on "her own."

Audra playing the French Horn (the one on the right) with the Ohio Wesleyan University Wind Ensemble

TAYLOR-  It has also been a big year for him as he's nearly finished with his driver's education.  He enjoys playing sousaphone/tuba in the band and is in the highest level of the winter bands.  He plays sax for jazz music and also has taken up banjo as well as the electric guitar.  He has been involved with the school robotic's club and chess club. (Things his parents know nothing about!)  He is nearly ready to take his Shaolin Kung Fu red belt test.  The next belt is black.

Getting ready to start the sweltering Ohio State Fair Parade

That's pretty much it, if you haven't been following the blog, you might not have heard about the 45 day disappearance/reappearance of 16 year old Ivy, Jack Russell as well as the passing of 14 year old Tucker, the same day she returned.  Long story...if you are interested, there is a previous blog post all about it.

From all of us here at the Thompson home, we wish you a Merry Christmas, and a wonderful New Year!

Love,

Mark and Gale

"Tru" Love Waits

and waits...and waits...about 25 years!  But it was worth that wait to get my dream Japanese Chin "Truly," aka We-Syng PEMs Truly Scrumptious.  She is also known as Chin-lee, Chin Chin, Turdly, Chin-Meister and "the Perculator". Doesn't matter what you call her.  She either comes, or she doesn't.  But she is an Empress, so dog rules don't apply.

This is Truly...

Update:  Rest in peace my beloved Truly--she passed away on 5/20/2017.  I can hardly look at these photos even though it's been almost a month.)

I could have had a Chin a long time ago, but I had a list of "requirements."  I have known two other champion Chin bitches and they set the standard for me.  All Chins are not alike.  Frankly, some are weird and many of them are ugly.  I gave my long-time friend and well-known Japanese Chin breeder Nanette Wright my list and she really came through!  I also want to thank co-owner Patricia Mushrush for allowing me to have this neat little dog.

In case you are wondering,  I only wanted a small, square, black and white female that could finish her AKC championship with a lovely head and to-die-for personality.  Kind of picky of me, but I did tell her to take her time...we picked her up the day after Christmas last year.

The photo at right shows her fabulous, "typie" head, complete with the white showing in the inside corners of her eyes that "surprised" look that is a vital breed trait.

I have known hundreds of dogs, but this one takes the cake!  She is dainty, yet will play hard with the yorkie until they are both out of breath.  She isn't pushy, but she will let you know when she is getting impatient with the lack of results.  She has only really barked a couple times (while tearing around playing), but she will "talk" to you.  She eats everything in sight, even if it's not food, but will stand forever deciding if she will take the bait while showing her.  Usually puppies get over chewing, but this gal will leave a path of destruction behind her (except she doesn't "do" toys..)

Truly on her way home her first day with us...

She sneaks my husband's foam earplugs, unshelled peanuts from the parrot's cage, chews on battery charger cords, books, magazines, pencils, you name it!  A whole basket of toys ignored though!  Here is the scene of one of her many peanut robberies...

Now she will jump into the box below the cage and steal them.  If I move the peanuts up top, the parrot just tosses them down to her!

This is how she spends the rest of her days...if you can't find her, look for the softest place around!  You may notice a pattern...

On the sofa pillows...

under the bed...

on the throw pillows next to the bed...

in front of the stove in the family room...

not allowed in bedroom dog bed by orders of the yorkie...

at the top of the steps...

on our bed...

on the blanket next to the dog bed...

back on our bed... and finally,

in bed with the yorkie "Carrie"!

My usual view of the TV!

When I first got her, the family joked about her and weren't that thrilled to have another dog.  But she won them over quickly and now they love on her like I do (OK, maybe not as much...)  She will sit in Mark's lap and watch "Ice Road Truckers" with her feet propped up on the chair's arm so she can clean them.  Our dogs don't sleep with us, but I let them watch TV with me.  The yorkie plunks down right away in her "spot."  Truly spends 15 minutes walking around and digging in the bed, then settling for less than perfect comfort.  (She tries for the pillows, but she's not allowed.  Some things have to be sacred!)

Well, it's time for her snack, so I must go...

Until next time...

Deck'n The 'Hood

I don't know about you all, but I am not getting many Christmas chores and errands done.  Even though we have an extra week this year, I am getting "behinder" every day!  Today is the day folks!  I am gonna get to it because I will be tied up all weekend and Monday.   Must set priorities...must set priorities...

Well, I did get the hen house decorated and we all know that is top priority!  The girls look like they live at the Moulin Rouge!

Here it is by day...

And by night...

Look who I found when I got home to get these pics?  If you look in front of the window of the above pic, you will see two blobs.  That would be Rocks Anne and Sophia!  How'd they get out????  They seem to always be on the outside looking in as they are the "young'uns!"

Here are a couple close ups of some decorations...

Some folks probably think I have too much time on my hands.  This wreath only took about an hour.

Oops, I need to clean the inside... something else for my to-do list!  Guess that is really a priority!

I did manage to put out my Nativity set.  I cherish this as it took me a whole Summer to paint about 20 years ago.  Yes, Mary had a wardrobe change... she could have had more than one outfit!  I thought about repainting her, but decided it was part of the set's charm.  I really miss the fireplace top where I used to display them.  They had more room.  But we needed the corn stove worse I guess.  Now they are lined up on top of the piano.  This set is the one thing I've done that the kids both want.  So, I guess I will have to find and paint another set.

There are several spots around the 'hood that have gone to what I think are extraordinary lengths to decorate.  I am sure I have missed some, so please don't be offended if your house isn't here LOL.  (Mine sure isn't!)  The photos don't do them justice.  I need a new camera Santa!!!

This house up the road has still more lights off to the sides!  It had to take days to decorate!  Cool full moon right behind it was a bonus!

The roof changes colors on this one, but the candy cane one didn't turn out:(

and last, but not least, this one is a condo with a dancing Santa far left (a tad creepy because he looks real at first glance...)

Well, I need to get ready to actually work tomorrow for a few hours.  I hope you are all enjoying getting ready for Christmas.  I have to get with the program ASAP!

Feliz Navidad!

A Hunting We Will Go!

Well, I promised a humor piece, so here it is.  This was originally published in the "AKC Family Pet" magazine, Summer 2004.  It is nice to sometimes make a little money recounting my canine calamities!  It was also nominated by the publisher for a Dog Writer's of America Award,  It was my second nomination (two different years, publishers and categories.)  I keep losing to more "famous" dog folks.  An easy feat, since I am not at all famous!  Maybe they are just better writers...naw, that can't be it...

This is a story of Ivy, previously reported about in other posts.  She celebrated her "Sweet 16" birthday a couple weeks ago.  She is gaining weight, still fickle, but not showing a desire to run off.  She hates her jacket I make her wear, but she hates being cold worse!

The other character in this tale is Karma.  Karma is now 12 and acts like a puppy.  Actually, she thinks like one...not the sharpest knife in the doggie drawer.  She is one "heckava" junior showmanship dog though.  Anybody can win with her as she throws free-stacks like nobody's business.  She can still flat-footed jump up on a grooming table.  She shows no signs of aging.

Anyway, I am not technically proficient on this blogging program, so the only way I know how to do this is to add sections as photos.  Otherwise, the file is too large.  Fingers crossed!  I think you can enlarge on your end if the print is too small.  It is taking me nearly as long to load this as it did to write it LOL!  Btw, you may notice that some of the words aren't quite my "style."  (Highjinks being one example...I don't think it's even spelled correctly!  Editors!)

OOPS!  Here is that photo whole!
